Industrialization Essay

Directions: Using the four documents you read about industrialization and the information you gathered from the images you viewed, you are to write a 5 paragraph essay arguing that something must be done to prevent the further suffering of workers and their families.



To organize your essay you will need:

  1. The list of complaints/issues from the industrialization readings.

  2. 3-6 direct quotes from the readings that will help support your argument.

  3. The list of what you have seen in the images of living and working conditions.

  4. The list of what issues you feel must be addressed as a result of what you have read and seen.

  5. Your textbook pages 244-245 (Stop at Union Movements Diverge) will help with introducing the time period.

Your essay should be organized using the template below:

  1. Introduction

    1. A brief introduction of the time period.

    2. Thesis statement – What you will prove in this essay

  2. First Body Paragraph (Child Labor)

    1. Topic Sentence (what will you discuss in this paragraph)

    2. Introduce this topic using your prior knowledge (Explain– the dangers of child labor – why do you think this must be addressed?)

    3. Introduce a quote.

    4. Give a quote from one of the documents that supports your topic sentence.

    5. Analysis of your quote or paraphrase

    6. Repeat the above steps to include more information

  3. Second Body Paragraph (Working Conditions)

    1. Topic Sentence (what will you discuss in this paragraph)

    2. Introduce this topic using your prior knowledge (Explain– the unfair and unsafe conditions workers face)

    3. Introduce a quote.

    4. Give a quote from one of the documents that supports your topic sentence.

    5. Analysis of your quote or paraphrase

    6. Repeat the above steps to include more information

  4. Third Body Paragraph (Living Conditions)

    1. Topic Sentence (what will you discuss in this paragraph)

    2. Introduce this topic using your prior knowledge (Explain– how were workers at the time living? Where were they living? Could they afford better conditions?)

    3. Introduce a quote.

    4. Give a quote from one of the documents that supports your topic sentence.

    5. Analysis of your quote or paraphrase

    6. Repeat the above steps to include more information

  5. Conclusion

    1. Explain why all evidence points to your thesis being correct
