The International and Diversity Institute (IDI) has a mission to serve Dowling College as consulting in comparative, international, diversity and development education. We will accomplish our mission by IDI affiliated faculty, staff, students, alumni, and affiliated-constituencies engaged in research, training, consultancies, partnerships, service, policy making, teaching, and other forms of practice in local, regional, national, and international contexts.

During Spring 2014 I continued to lead the process of developing programs sponsored by the International and Diversity Institute at the School of Education that benefit college wide diversity services and attract multicultural undergraduate and graduate students.


Importance of this Institute
Open Doors 2011 was released on November 14, 2013. Institute of International Education (IIE) held a briefing at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to discuss new statistics and trends. The number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by five percent to 723,277 during the 2010/11 academic year, as we become part of the globalized world, new views are needed for students and teachers. In 2000, Long Island's minority population increased to 23.6 percent, up from 15.9 percent in 1990. The need to understand diversity has also become a necessity for educational institutes. We believe that IISED institute will provide these services as consulting and training activities.

IDI will provide Dowling College with one of the most dynamic and productive, internationally-oriented schools of education in the world. IDI will be comprised of Affiliated Faculty and Graduate Students associated with the School of Education. IDI also will work in collaboration with many other organizations and departments within the Dowling College.
Organizational Goals
IDI will accomplish its mission by focusing its strategic activities toward the achievement of five major goals:

Goal 1: to serve as a premier research, planning, monitoring and evaluation hub for development projects in cross-cultural and international contexts;

Goal 2: to offer capacity building expertise and assistance for educational agencies at all levels, and other multidisciplinary programs, higher education institutions, and indigenous education programs, diversity and multicultural programs with a long-term goal toward local sustainability;

Goal 3: to help develop a global orientation and international and diversity understandings among faculty, staff, alumni and other constituencies of Dowling College;

Goal 4: to assist colleagues in public and private schools in the New York area to internationalize their curricula and to be linked to a global network of educators; and to infuse diversity and multicultural topics.

Goal 5: to facilitate institutional linkages as well as visiting scholar and other exchange programs on an international level.
Affiliated Members – Think globally, act locally, and globally
Through IDI, faculty and professionals from the United States and overseas pursue an institutional focus on such areas as Higher Education Policy, Planning, Management and Evaluation; Elementary and Secondary Education Policy, Planning, Management and Evaluation; Curriculum Reforms and Textbook Production; Educational Testing and Assessment; Participatory Planning for Educational Renewal; Teacher Development through Active Learning; Decision-Oriented Research; Distance Education and Diversity Studies.

Faculty and professionals affiliated with IDI will be involved in research, sector assessment, project and program evaluation activities; and technical cooperation and professional exchanges with educators from all over the world. In collaboration with other Schools, Departments, faculty members affiliated with IISED will conduct special training programs for educators and government officials from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America and locally in New York.


In Fall 2014 I Continue the IDI growth, and its primary summits: Latino Summit and Diversity Summit to promote higher education among high school students and transfer students.. Represent and promote Dowling College, the School of Education among school districts and community colleges as a diverse learning center. Conduct outreach programs to international students that offer workshops and degrees such as the MS in Educational Technology and Leadership.

  • NUMBER OF PEOPLE: 100 PEOPLE - 80 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS – 18 PARENTS, 2 COUNSELORS

  • SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT PARTICIPATED: EAST HAMPTON (BROUGHT A GROUP), SOUTHAMPTON (BROUGHT A GROUP), PARENTS OF HS STUDENT FROM LONGWOOD, RIVERHEAD CAME ALONE

  • KEYNOTE: MIGRATION LAWYER: DANA DAVIDSON

  • CLUBS: DOWLING COLLEGE CLUB OF STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATED : LA FAMILIA CLUB

  • DEPARTMENTS: DOWLING DEPARTMENTS THAT SUPPORTED THE SUMMIT: HEOP, FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS DEPARTMENT, CAREER CENTER, FINACIAL AID AND ADMISSIONS.

  • SUPPORT TO THE EVENT: FIRST TIME WE DID THE EVENT, EVENT WAS DONE BASED ON OUTSIDE DONATIONS, PERUVIAN AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND DOWLING PROFESSORS.

  • EVALUATION RESULTS: VERY POSITIVE, WARM AND ENCOURAGING EVENT, FOOD NEEDED IMPROVEMENT, PANEL OF PROFESSORS WERE VERY LONG.

  • LESSONS LEARNED: TRANSFER STUDENTS ARE ALSO INTERESTED IN PARCIPATING IN THESE KINDS OF EVENTS, STUDENTS WISHED TO HAVE INFORMATION FROM CAREERS THAT DOWLING COLLEGE DOESN’T HAVE

  • ACTIONS DECIDED FOR THE NEXT SUMMIT: INVITE SUFFOLK COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO DISPLAY ITS PROGRAMS, AND INVITE TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM SCCC TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT – CANCELL THE PANEL OF PROFESSORS, AND CHANGE IT FOR AN INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS WITH THEM, CHANGE THE FOOD VENDOR, AND FIND FOR MORE SUPPORT.

  • NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO SIGNED TO DOWLING: 7 STUDENTS – COULD BE MORE AS WE DID NOT COUNT THE EFFECTS AFTER THE EVENT.

  • LESSONS LEARNED: HAVING TWO LATINO SUMMITS TOO CLOSE WAS HARD TO GET CONSULORS TO PARTICIPATE TWICE.

  • ACTIONS RECOMMENDED : ONE LATINO SUMMIT PER YEAR

  • NUMBER OF PEOPLE: 140 PEOPLE – 75 % HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, 5% TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES, 15 % PARENTS, 5 % SCHOOL COUNSELORS

  • SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT PARTICIPATED: Participants has grew from 2 schools (Longwood and Southampton) to seven (Northport, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, Brentwood, William Floyd, Westhampton Beach).

  • OTHER: SUFFOLK COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WAS INVITED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE STUDENTS AND FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE WAS ALSO INVITED

  • LESSONS LEARNED: EVERYTHING WENT GREAT. IDEA OF NOT HAVING BREAKFAST WAS NOT GOOD.

  • ACTIONS RECOMMENDED: CONSULORS PREFER WEEK DAYS AND PARENTS PREFER WEEKENDS. STUDENTS LIKE TO TALK WITH STUDENTS WE DECIDED TO INVITE MORE DOWLING CLUBS.

  • NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO SIGNED TO DOWLING: 8 STUDENTS – COULD BE MORE AS WE DID NOT COUNT THE EFFECTS AFTER THE EVENT.

  • OTHER: SUFFOLK COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WAS INVITED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO THE STUDENTS
