Germanic tribes overran Europe from about 400 to 700, ending Roman rule.
Medieval Europe was ruled by kings in cooperation with the Christian church.
Charlemagne was the most famous and powerful king in Medieval Europe.
The Christian church was not simply a religious institution, it also held great political, economic, and cultural power.
During the middle ages, the bubonic plague (or “black death”) killed about 1/3 of the European population.
For 200 years, Christians fought a series of religious wars known as the crusades in an attempt to reclaim Palestine/Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Although these wars led to terrible killing and destruction, they also fostered cultural diffusion between Europe and the wider world.
