Raíces y Sueños: the Artistry of Cuba

Translated as Roots and Dreams, the name refers to the connections that each artist has to Cuba (their artistic and cultural roots) as well as the aspirations and visions communicated through their art forms. Through this series and the surrounding programming, the performing artists and collaborating community partners honor their ancestors, their mentors, the legends that continue to inspire and the dreams that have been passed on and continue to be reimagined.

The Ordway is pleased to present a series of events with connections to Cuba and Cuban culture in the 2014-2015 season. As enhancements to the performances of Nachito Herrera and his Cuban Orchestra, the Creole Choir of Cuba and CONTRA-TIEMPO, the Ordway will present a series of community engagement activities including master classes, cultural conversations, workshops, and lecture demonstrations that will open new doors into Cuban culture for artists and audiences alike.

The work is guided by Twin Cities-based artists, community leaders, and organizational partners whose ongoing work is rooted in Cuban culture and artistic expression. Generous funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Arts Access program allows for multiple pathways of participation, from community events to transportation support and special group rates.

Taking Our Place Centerstage is a multiyear initiative that demonstrates the Ordway’s ongoing commitment to community engagement, education and audience development. It includes the recent cultural celebrations of the African Diaspora in Harmony, Máscaras y Milagros, and this year’s Raíces y Sueños.
